New API Report Highlights the Decline of Outdoor Play in Primary Schools

The Association of Play Industries has published a new report exploring the state of outdoor play in primary schools, and the findings are a strong reminder of just how important well-designed outdoor spaces are for children’s learning, wellbeing and development.

The report found that outdoor play and learning opportunities often reduce as children move through primary school. While 78% of EYFS settings use outdoor areas throughout the day, this drops to just 16% by KS2. Play-based learning also falls sharply, from 98% in EYFS to just 10% in KS2.

As proud API members, PlayQuest believes outdoor spaces should support children throughout their whole primary journey, not just in the early years. Well-designed play environments can encourage movement, imagination, social confidence and age-appropriate challenge.

The report also highlights that schools are often relying on lower-cost, lower-risk equipment, with playground markings and mud kitchens among the most common features, while higher-challenge equipment such as swings and trampolines are found in fewer than 1 in 10 schools.

For schools working with tight budgets, thoughtful planning is key. API members can provide support beyond installation, including consultation, planning guidance, maintenance advice and long-term project expertise.

The full API report also explains why accredited suppliers matter, with API members required to meet high standards around professionalism, quality and safety.
